Gaining weight despite consuming much lower than my recommended intake

I am at a bit of a loss.

I work full-time. I'm on my feet all day and my job is quite physical. If I were to guess I eat probably 2000-2500 calories a day on average, but most days are around 2000.

Calculators are telling me just to maintain my weight I need to be eating 3600 calories and to lose a pound a week, 3100.

So what's the deal?

I am 6'4, 280 lbs.

I really want to be healthier for the physical and mental benefits, but the weight just doesn't seem to want to budge.

If it's of any consequence, I have an under active thyroid but I take medication for it and apparently my levels are normal.
