Congress offers support to JD(S) to form government in Karnataka

NEW DELHI: In a bid to keep the BJP from coming to power in Karnataka, the Congress on Tuesday offered support to the JD(S) for government formation in the southern state.

With no party getting a clear majority in the 224-member assembly after several rounds of counting of votes, the Congress preemptively made the move to ally with the HD Deve Gowda-led JD(S) and deny BJP the chance to form the next government in Karnataka.

"We accept the mandate of the people. We bow our heads to the verdict. We don’t have numbers to form government. The Congress has offered to support JD(S) to form government," Karnataka Congress leader G Parameshwara told reporters after a meeting with central Congress leaders.

Karnataka Election Results: Congress Ready To Back JDS As BJP Still Short Of Majority - 10 Points

The Karnataka election results will set the stage for more battles later this year in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and the general election in 2019

NEW DELHI:  The BJP is set to win an outright majority in Karnataka, wresting another major state from the Congress ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's bid for re-election in 2019. The BJP now has 21 of India's 29 states, with the Congress, which ruled the country for seven decades, reduced to "PPP" or "Punjab, Puducherry or Parivar" - as PM Modi had jibed while campaigning in Karnataka. The regional party Janata Dal Secular of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda performed better than expected but will not get to play kingmaker, with a clear verdict in favour of the BJP. Karnataka, home to India's Silicon Valley capital of Bengaluru, is the first big state election this year and will be followed by three more before 2019.

Here is the 10-point cheatsheet on Karnataka election results:

1. Celebrations erupted at the BJP's offices in Bengaluru, with supporters shouting victory slogans and waving the party's flag and cut-outs of PM Modi as the results trickled in.  In less than three hours of counting, the BJP had crossed the half-way mark and was on its way to winning a majority on its own - without any support. The BJP is set to cross the majority mark is 112.
2. Karnataka delivers another epic defeat for the Congress and its President Rahul Gandhi, who failed completely in exploiting dissatisfaction over farmers unrest, lack of jobs and rising fuel prices. It will be difficult for Rahul Gandhi to claim leadership in any opposition alliance against the BJP in 2019. The party now holds only three states - Punjab, Puducherry and Mizoram.
3. Had the Congress formed an alliance with the Janata Dal Secular before the Karnataka election, the poll outcome would have been "very different", said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been at the forefront of attempts to evolve a non-Congress, non-BJP front ahead of the national election.
4. The BJP made big gains in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) belt, which was in part because of the "Sriramulu" effect. The BJP bet on B Sriramulu, a powerful SC/ST leader and a close aide of the powerful Reddy brothers of Ballari, giving him two seats to contest.
5. The BJP's score also indicates the Lingayats have stayed with the party despite Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of the Congress announcing minority status to them as members of a separate religion.
6. The BJP's own analysis was that Rahul Gandhi declaring himself a prime ministerial candidate was a big reason for the party's defeat. "The Congress played divisive politics and Siddaramaiah is not a big leader," said Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
7. The JDS of Deve Gowda has done better than the last time and is heading for a bigger number than the Congress would have hoped. But the regional party will not get to play kingmaker, with the BJP winning a decisive victory instead of the hung verdict projected by exit polls.
8. Karnataka has maintained its long-standing habit of not supporting the incumbent; no party has been re-elected in the state for 30 years. Karnataka Congress' DK Shivakumar said though "Rahul Gandhi tried his best", the local leadership including Siddaramaiah had failed the party.
9. BS Yeddyurappa, the presumptive chief minister who headed the BJP's first government in Karnataka in 2008, had declared a "date" for his oath ceremony even before the election, May 17 Thursday. There are reports that he has also booked a stadium.

Karnataka election results 2018 live: BJP regains Karnataka, Yeddyurappa set to be CM

With all trends of Karnataka Assembly election results pouring in, the BJP is touching the half-way mark, with leads on 112 seats. The Congress faces a rout with leads on only 68 seats while the JDS remains on the third position, leading on 40 seats.

With trends pouring in from all 222 seats, for which votes were counted in Karnataka Assembly elections, the BJP is touching the half-way mark with leads on 112 seats. The Congress stands far behind with leads on just 68 seats. The third major player – Janata Dal Secular, which was expected to emerge as the kingmaker, stands at the third position with leads on 40 seats. Counting of votes for 222 Assembly seats in Karnataka began at 8 am on Tuesday, with both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) exhuming confidence of a victory. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah does not seem comfortable on both Chamundeshwari and Badami Assembly seats.

Polling for the 222 seats took place on May 12 as fate of 2,655 candidates was locked in EVMs. Karnataka recorded a record voter turnout of 72.13 per cent – the highest since the 1952 Karnataka Assembly elections.

Karnataka witnessed a high-decibel campaign with big names like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi leading the battle for the BJP and the Congress respectively. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is facing a tough battle to ensure Congress returns to power. Even history is against him as no party has been able to win two consecutive Karnataka Assembly elections since the Janata Dal's victory in 1983 and 1985. Siddaramaiah on Sunday sounded confident of Congress retaining power and added that this was his last election. He contested from two seats - Chamundeshwari and Badami.

He had also ruled out that Congress was exploring a post-poll alliance with the former prime minister HD Deve Gowda-led JDS. The Congress has been facing a string of electoral routs over the last few years with the only exception being Punjab Assembly elections 2017 and apart a win in Karnataka will come as a shot in the arm for the Grand Old Party.

PM Modi, BJP's chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa and party national president Amit Shah had claimed that their party would secure a majority on its own in Karnataka Assembly. Yeddyurappa predicted that the BJP would win 130 seats and the Congress would be relegated to a distant second with just 70 while the JDS would bag 25 seats.

Exit polls had predicted a hung Assembly with almost all of them predicting a close contest between the ruling Congress and its main rival the BJP with JDS expected to play the role of a kingmaker if no party manages to secure a majority on its own. At present, the majority mark is 112 as results will be declared for only 222 seats.

नई दिल्‍ली: कर्नाटक विधानसभा चुनाव के नतीजों से अब यह साफ हो चला है कि वहां बीजेपी सरकार बनाएगी. बीजेपी के लिए कर्नाटक 22वां राज्‍य होगा जहां उसकी सरकार बनेगी. कांग्रेस की सरकार अब सिर्फ पंजाब में है यानि वह सिर्फ एक राज्‍य में मौजूद है. कांग्रेस शासित प्रदेश में बीजेपी का जीतना बड़ी फतह के रूप में देखा रजा रहा है. एग्जिट पोल में भी उसके जीतने की संभावना जताई गई थी. इस चुनाव को कांग्रेस क्‍यों नहीं जीत पाई, पेश है उसके प्रमुख कारण :

1. सत्‍ता विरोधी लहर : कर्नाटक में कांग्रेस की सरकार थी. विधानसभा चुनाव 2018 के नतीजों के शुरुआती रुझानों से यही लगता है कि यहां सत्‍ता विरोधी लहर से भाजपा को फायदा मिला. इसी कारण बीते साल बीजेपी ने यूपी और उत्‍तराखंड के विधानसभा चुनाव में जबरदस्‍त जीत दर्ज की थी. त्रिपुरा, नगालैंड, मणिपुर और मेघालय में भी सत्‍ता विरोधी लहर ने फतह दिलाई. अगर बीजेपी यहां जीतती है तो यह 21वां राज्‍या होगा जहां उसकी सरकार बनेगी. उसकी पहले से ही 20 राज्‍यों में चाहे गठबंधन या बहुमत के रूप में सरकार है. हालांकि सत्‍ता विरोधी लहर के कारण ही उसे पंजाब से बाहर होना पड़ा था. वहां कांग्रेस जीती थी.
2. 2013 के चुनाव से अलग रणनीति : बीजेपी ने इस बार कर्नाटक में 2013 के विधानसभा चुनाव से अलग रणनीति अपनाई. वह एकदम अलग पार्टी के रूप में सामने नजर आई. जितनी भी रैलियां या रोड शो हुए उसमें बीजेपी नेताओं ने कांग्रेस पर जमकर प्रहार किया. उसके नेता काफी आक्रामक थे. 2013 में खनन माफिया रेड्डी बंधुओं से रिश्‍ते सामने आने पर बीजेपी को मुख्‍यमंत्री बीएस येदियुरप्‍पा से इस्‍तीफा लेना पड़ा था. इससे बीजेपी तीन भागों में बंट गई थी. एक धड़ा पार्टी के साथ था, दूसरा येदियुरप्‍पा के साथ और तीसरा आदिवासी नेता बी श्रीरामुलु के साथ चला गया था. इस कारण कांग्रेस उस साल चुनाव आसानी से जीत गई थी. लेकिन बाद के वर्षों में बीजेपी ने इस स्थिति में सुधार किया और इस चुनाव में एक पार्टी के रूप में उभरी. उस पर प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी का नेतृत्‍व और मददगार साबित हुआ. 
3. धनबल : बीजेपी 20 राज्‍यों में सरकार में है. यह भी संभावना है कि 2019 के आम चुनाव में भी भाजपा को फतह मिले. इससे कारोबारी जगत के लिए बीजेपी कांग्रेस की तुलना में ज्‍यादा आकर्षक लग रही है. इस कारण पार्टी को डोनेशन भी काफी मिल रहा है. कांग्रेस की सरकार सिर्फ पंजाब में है. इसलिए कारोबारी जगत कांग्रेस में कम रुचि ले रहा है. 
4. स्‍वयंसेवकों की फौज : भाजपा के पास अनपेड वालंटियर (स्‍वयंसेवियों) की फौज है जबकि कांग्रेस की इस मामले में प्रतिद्वंद्वि दल से कोई तुलना नहीं है. उसके पास सिर्फ आइडियोलॉजी (विचारधारा) है. उसे चुनाव में एजेंटों की मदद लेनी पड़ती है. राजनीतिक पंडितों का मानना है कि धन और स्‍वयंसेवी अकेले चुनाव नहीं जीता सकते हैं. लेकिन अगर ये दोनों साथ आ जाएं और सत्‍ता विरोधी लहर हो तो यह चुनाव जीतने का मुख्‍य कारण बन सकते हैं.
5. राज्‍य का पिछड़ना : मुख्‍यमंत्री सिद्धारमैया के कार्यकाल में कर्नाटक की तरक्‍की रुक सी गई थी. उनका शासन भले ही प्रभावकारी रहा हो लेकिन उनके कार्यकाल में राज्‍य का जीडीपी कुछ खास नहीं बढ़ा. सिद्धारमैया ने चुनाव जीतने के लिए सभी तरह के दांव लगाए. जिन राज्‍यों में बीजेपी ने हितकारी योजनाओं के बूते चुनाव जीता उन्‍हें सिद्धारमैया ने अपने यहां लागू किया. मसलन एक रुपए किलो में चावल, आंशिक कर्ज माफी और कैंटीन में सिर्फ 5 रुपए में भोजन उपलब्‍ध कराना. लिंगायत समुदाय के वोट कांग्रेस के पक्ष में लाने के लिए उन्‍हें अल्‍पसंख्‍यक दर्जा दिलाने की सिफारिश की. लेकिन ऐसा कम ही देखने को मिला है कि सत्‍ता विरोधी लहर के आगे हितकारी योजनाएं या जातिगत समीकरण कभी ठहर पाए हैं.
