Moving On Up

“Well we’re movin on up,  To the east side.  To a deluxe apartment in the sky.  Movin on up, To the east side. We finally got a piece of the pie.”  Janet Dubois / Jeff Barry

If all of your dreams came true tomorrow where would you be?

diamond photoWe are like children in the candy store looking at the seductive treats with desire. Little do we know that if we had our wishes and ate all that we saw it would make us sick.

There is at best an uncertainty in life. We are all one moment away from total disaster. We could have a stroke or a heart attack and our life would be changed irrevocably. Society could collapse on us. Already it has failed millions of people. But we could fall into something like the great depression or we could embark on World War 3 or even both.

I would imagine that the majority of people desire to have a large amount of money. We are taught that money equals success and that this brings happiness. That is an outright lie. Money can solve some problems but it brings new problems. Material possessions never brought anybody happiness except for the short moment. In the future, the materialistic person desires more and more. If one thinks as accumulating wealth in the same terms as hoarding that is a valuable insight.

True love is a very noble desire. I think when I was a child growing up it was my priority. I  had a very disturbed childhood and I never felt close to anybody. So for me to find some magical woman to complete my life was extremely important. Of course, being emotionally immature I was in no shape to handle any serious relationship. If I got my wish I probably would have squandered it.

Which brings me to the point is that we can’t always handle what we desire. There was a man at church who was a recovering drug addict. The government owed him some money and we constantly prayed that he would get his money. He was not well off financially and he could have used the few hundred dollars. But don’t you know it as soon as he got his wish and the money was put in his hand he went off and squandered it on drugs. In the end, he was out of the money and in worse shape than when he began. So be careful what you wish for it might come true.

The best dreams of the future are for a world in which all man live in a closer, harmonious cooperative way.  That somehow collectively that we could get rid of war and the other atrocities that run rampant in this day and age. Our greatest foe for achieving a better world is the apathy that so many have. So many who could do so much simply do not care because for the moment they are secure. It is this short-sightedness that will eventually bring ruin to all. Their neighbor’s house is burning down but they don’t care because their’s is not burning, yet.

I recall being a senior in high school and one of my teachers wanted to talk to me. I was never close to this man, probably never having even one personal conversation. He came to me and told me this grand story about being responsible. When he was entering college he had a chance to go into professional baseball but chose the academic route. He told me that I should be responsible.

Well, first and foremost his effort was far too little and far too late. If he really had even an inkling of concern for me he should have tried to have motivated me or engaged me in some fashion. As it was his conversation was most inappropriate. While I could readily agree that I did the bare minimum in his class with other teachers I showed enthusiasm. So, who really was at fault here. Me a student needing to be shaped and molded or the teacher failing to inspire and motivate. But for some reason, he decided to give me this dramatic speech. It was like the alcoholic father who was never in a child’s life trying to give some advice.

I kept the story with me for years. I once had a job with a UPS driver. We would pass the day by telling each other stories. I told this story to the driver for some reason. The driver who was captain of his football team in high school shared some insight. He told me that every athlete who ever walked on the playing field had dreams of playing in the pros. Thus the driver found my teacher’s story more than unbelievable. I agreed.

The majority of us will not have our dreams fulfilled but then again we can always modify them. But some things are worth fighting for. Maybe you don’t see the connection but it exists. Why should you care about somebody half the world away getting blown up by bombs your tax money pays for? In the long run, an injury to one is an injury to all. Also, you will reap what you sow. If we don’t come together and build something better the bottom will drop out. At that point, it will be far too late to avoid disaster. Dream righteous dreams and you will never be disappointed.

A Panther’s Dream

By John Kaniecki

Dream, dream, dream
Dream as much as you can
One day you will grow
To be a woman or man
Don’t let the darkness destroy
The Love of life and your sweet joy
There are those of us who wish you glory
That is the Black Panther story
Nothing good comes without a fight
Just like doing wrong is never right
When we were young we fought like hell
So when you were young life would be well
You too have your cross to bear and work to do
Know our thoughts and prayers are with you
It is not children who dream alone
We dream also, those who have grown
Yet there is something about dreams really strange
The people are different but the dreams don’t change
To live a good life and to be all you can
Seems like happiness is in everybody’s plan
Child when life hits your hard and you just gotta scream
Dream, dream, dream
Dream as much as you can
Cause fighting for your dreams
Makes you a woman or a man
Dream, dream, dream
Dream
