I know this is purely psychological but I have been looking up recipes for low fat food which of course uses low fat ingredients. My family are very big on "whole foods" and not using low fat food because of "the chemicals". I have really been craving chicken alfredo pasta but each serving tops like 700 to 800 calories if I use whole ingredients. We like the cheese!
I did find a pasta recipe that it came I think to 300 ingredients that looked good but I guess I am worried that it won't taste the same and that I will become "That Person" that my family has always rolled their eyes at for so many years. My family and I always had an inside joke about people who fill their house with low fat ingredients, make low fat meals and talk about the calorie content, and you always see them drinking a diet soda. My mom will always respond with, "They are doing more damage to their system because fake sugar doesn't taste right and actually makes you hungrier." or "You know the food is just off when you use low fat", or "I don't see how they stand that, it just isn't living."
The funny thing is now I am the one who is on the path to becoming that person we all would shake our head at. I almost bought reduced fat cream cheese but stopped myself because I didn't want to be "that person." I could just imagine my family's eyes when they come over and it doesn't taste the same.
I also want to say that even though it looks like I am being hard on my family or that my family is unsupportive they are not. For many years I thought the same thing and fully went along with the "low fat= they must be crazy or desperate" idea. My family fully encourages me to lose weight and is always there with a kind word. My family is a-ok with cutting portion sizes, using "low calorie" food (just not low fat), and tracking calories.
In the south food is seen as love so using full ingredients seems natural to them. My Mom also has a habit of leaving me a box or cookies or a candy bar every time she comes over but that is not the end of the world.
Does anyone else have to deal with this or have family like this? Do low fat ingredients really taste that bad? Please let me know and have an amazing day!
