Can I lose weight or no?

o I'm [M. 18] in my first year in univeristy, I'm taking kinesiology, and in one the lectures, the professor made a statement that genes account for 75% of our obesity risk and 25% is environmental. And as of right now ill be honest I'm not obese but in overweight according to the BMI tables online. And I really want to lose weight and feel better overall. And after hearing this lecture im kind of scared of the fact that, what if my genes affect my weight loss. Is it possible that if I were to workout for 2 months straight with a proper diet and proper sleep schedule, and not lose any significant weight and still have a bloated stomach. The main question im asking is, will my genes cause me to never lose weight and always have a big stomach?
