Is it possible to change your appetite?

We all know that one person who is thin but doesn't count calories or follow any rigid rules around eating. This could be attributed simply to genetics, however they usually are also the people who simply 'forget to eat' or who are content to only have a bit of something and not feel mentally deprived. Then there are those of us who are always thinking about our next meal, who feel mentally tortured when deprived or restricted from certain foods which we will inevitably overeat if given the chance. I'm not a fat person by any means, I exercise daily and consider myself quite fit, if I do say so myself. But I wish to rid myself of the power and mental space food takes up in my life. I have tried counting calories but it seems to unnatural to me and unsustainable, plus it severely limits my eating options when I go to parties or family's houses. I wish food would not hold such a huge power over my life and my thinking. Has anyone managed to change their appetite to that of the person I described in the beginning?
