Figuring out sustainable eating.

I lost weight once before, when I was 18 I went on an extreme calorie restriction diet, the same food but way less of it. I was usually eating around 1000cal a day.

I froze mini chocolate bars so I wouldn’t binge the whole bag at once and ate cheese Toasties on white bread and pasta or potato based meals most nights for dinner. I was hungry all the time, and I was miserable but the weight came off. I dropped from 130kg (286lb) to 104kg (229lb). I fit into a gorgeous bridesmaids dress for my sisters wedding and then I got home and decided I deserved a reward for achieving that. Next thing I knew I was above 150kg (330lb) and climbing.

I developed back problems and was diagnosed with type two diabetes and realised that I needed to make some changes. But not calorie counting, I couldn’t bring myself to ever be that hungry and miserable again. So the soda disappeared, the bread turned to whole grain as did the rice and pasta. The obvious candy stopped being a staple in the house but the bags of chips were still fine right? That was salt not sugar.

Then I started an exercise program to try and strengthen the muscles around my back injury, and it was great beginning to make some progress but I decided I didn’t want to work out three days a week and not see any progress because I was still eating junk so the bags of chips and licorice went too.

Then the diabetes dietician asked me to track everything I ate for two weeks so she could look for areas I could improve. I looked for an app I could track it in that wouldn’t track the calories, but eventually decided to bite the bullet and use MyFitnessPal.

I was eating a lot better and I’d even managed to lose a few pounds when I watched ‘That Sugar Film’ and realised that there is sugar in everything!

It’s been six weeks now since I went Sugarfree. I’ve been eating when I’m hungry and not when I’m not. Technically I’m counting calories, and tracking my macros but more and more I’m intuitively eating. I’m not hungry all the time, this isn’t miserable. In fact my energy levels have improved so much life is feeling so much easier.

I’ve lost 12 kilograms (25lbs) and 14cm (5.5 inches) off my waist measurement, I’ve gained some muscle too. But most importantly I can see myself being able to eat like this fairly happily for the rest of my life.

Sugarfree works for me. It might be something else that works for you, but don’t let your first try not working keep you from trying something else. When you’re feeding your body what it needs to run well, it’ll be so much easier to eat at a deficit and get that weight off.

We can do this.
