Hello, and thanks for all the tips so far!

Hi loseit redditors,

I’ve been lurking and learning for a while now and thought it was about time to introduce myself.

I have type two diabetes and sciatica caused by a crushed disk in my spine.

I did a series of sessions with an excercise physio in the pool then joined the connected gym in November 2018. The aqua aerobics have been great for increasing my flexibility getting rid of the stiffness and at the end of December I started working out in the gym three days a week too.

Usually that means 30 minutes of cardio on the treadmill at 4kph, (2.4 mph) and a set (or two now!) on some of the intro level arm and back workout machines. Then some squats and the leg press to build back some of the muscle I’ve lost while recovering from the sciatica. I picked up some dumbbells as well and have been using them at home on the off days.

But I still wasn’t losing weight, which I attributed to building muscle and water weight from starting a new workout.

The last few weeks I started tracking calories in MyFitnessPal (which I learned about here) in preparation for an appointment I’ve set up with a dietitian and I made a few adjustments once I was thinking about what I was eating.

Then five days ago I watched ‘That Sugar Film’ and was that eye opening!? My husband and I have decided to try drop refined sugar from our diet so we cleared out the juice, the cereal and half the pantry and replaced the fruit yoghurt with Greek. I’ve included carbs only at meals and am trying to snack on fruit, veg or cheese if I’m hungry between. Thankfully we were already skipping the worst of the junk food and had switched over to wholemeal everything a couple of years ago.

The last couple of days my blood glucose numbers have been better than I’ve seen them since I was first diagnosed and my cravings have gone. I feel like I have more energy and I’m feeling more positive and less anxious.

I’m 27, 5’7 and when I started I was 177kg (390lb). Last Friday I weighed in at 171kg (377)! I have a long way to go, but for the first time in years this feels doable.
