Is it true you need to eat more to weigh less?

I’ve been losing it for three months. The first week I lost 4 lbs and 8 for the month. The next month 3, and the third month I was just staying flat. Measured my food. One of my rules is I’m completely honest about tracking what I eat even on “bad” days.

Goal weight 120, starting weight 146. I’ve been stuck 131-133 for a month. Tracking calories, working out no movement. Take a week vacation and move calorie goal to maintenance level. Return home without weight gain and go back to 500 calorie deficit. I’ve dropped 4 lbs in the last week. Is there an explanation? Did I need to “eat” to break the plateau?
