Hello!
I'll skip the life story of how I've always been overweight growing up, been bullied for my weight, felt insecure, etc. I mean no offense to the users on here that make those posts, I understand that those posts are great for advice and motivation, but I'll leave that story for another time. I'm really happy to finally reach one of my goal weights after bouncing around for about 2 years!
I have some tips(?) for those that want them, but let it be known that I'm not an expert in this field and these tips are just what has worked for me in my own personal weight-loss journey. Everyone is different and what I've been doing may not work for everybody:
Intermittent Fasting! Are you like me and like to eat large portions? Well this is the solution you seek! For me, it was never *what* I was eating, it was *how much* I was eating. Nowadays I try to stick to the 16/8 and have 2 moderately large meals with maybe a little snack in between. That has helped limit food cravings a lot.
CICO! Well, yeah. Spoiler alert. I'd say tracking calories helped me start out and understand how much I was eating in a day. I usually wrote stuff in a journal and calculated that way because that's my preference. After about 3 months, however, I stopped tracking and now just eat a serving of food at a time. Which brings me to my next point:
Portion sizes! It really helped me to make and eat 1 serving at a time. That way when I was done, I had to get up and get another serving. I wasn't mindlessly eating large portions anymore since I had to get up, weigh, and measure the same food. It slows you down a bit and it makes you think: "Am I really hungry or just bored?"
Make a routine and stick with it. This isn't supposed to be a "lose 10 lbs per week" kind of deal. It is something that you should be able to do week after week, month after month. Going to the gym everyday is great! But I've found myself burnt out by Wednesday. Make a plan for the week that is not going to cause stress or strain on your body. Remember: Long-term is the goal. I am a firm believer that Discipline > Motivation.
Final Point: Don't torture yourself. I understand that tracking calories and portion control can be a slippery slope for some people. But please don't obsess over reaching that perfect number every day. Let yourself enjoy life, go out with friends to a restaurant every once in a while. If anything, I'd say plan your rewards instead of rewarding yourself on the fly. If I rewarded myself after every workout, I'd probably not make any progress.
TL:DR: Find a routine that you can maintain and is reasonable for your lifestyle
I've been on this subreddit for a while so I realize that everything I said has very likely been said already. But, this is a post that I needed to see when I was starting out, so that's my main reason for posting this. Its also an accountability post in a way, because I'll probably come back here from time to time to remind myself that it is possible. 20 lbs. till my long term goal weight! As long as I can prevent myself from eating an entire watermelon as a reward tonight!
That's all for now! Good luck to all in your personal journeys!
