This is why you should workout

We've all heard that the most important thing you can do to lose weight is eat fewer calories. Excercise can help you burn a few hundred extra each day, but it's not gonna get you to where you want to be without the diet component. If you only have the mental capacity for one major change, they say, keep it simple and focus on what you eat.

Well, I've always taken this advice to heart. I eat right, don't worry too much about how active I am, and I do fine-- for a few weeks. Then my motivation plummets and I'm back to square 1... or -1.

This time, I did things a bit differently. At my latest annual physical, I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and high cholesterol and told to lose 10 lbs and be physically active for 30 minutes each day for heart health. Something about my doctor telling me that really hit home for me... so I promised myself I would make it happen. I bought a basic Fitbit and a membership to the closest gym to my house. I started counting calories again.

It's been a couple of months since that doctor's visit. I've lost close to 20 lbs. I work out, every day. Not because I want to always (although I often do), but because I need to. My body craves the feeling I get from biking to the gym, listening to my music, doing cardio, and lifting weights. My motivation to eat right is just as strong as it was when I first started, and I think the reason is that I can literally feel my body getting stronger when I'm at the gym. I can run for longer, I can lift more. And that feeling is addicting. I wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardize it.

I know I still have a long way to go before I get my body to a place where I feel confident and healthy. But I have a feeling this diet is going to stick. And if that means I need to embrace the gym lifestyle, so be it.
