I started at 250 last year, on April Fool's day in fact, and my last weigh in yesterday was 198. This is the first time in nearly 20 years that I've been under 200 pounds, and seeing that 1 at the front of the number feels really gratifying. I also recently got to buy some new shirts and pants in smaller sizes than I had before, which felt pretty great too. I'm aiming for 185 as a target weight, and I expect to get there in about 3 to 6 months from now at my current pace.
For me it was mostly a matter of breaking some bad food habits, and establishing better ones. Like, at lunch I might have a sandwich with fries, and a cup of soup, and some chips, and maybe cookies later on. Now I'll just get the sandwich and call it a day, or sometimes a salad (if the lettuce at the salad bar looks alright; the cafeteria at my work is kinda meh). And then for dinner I'll make something I can easily split into predefined portions for the next few meals. Nothing very elaborate or extreme diet-wise, just avoiding junk food and paying more attention to portion sizes, really. I've also tried to train myself to enjoy the feeling of being slightly hungry – it's like the burn while lifting a weight, it means I'm making progress.
A few weeks ago I got some dumbbells to do some basic exercises with, and as I was carrying two 20 pounders up to my room I thought (after The Hacker's Diet) how I'd basically been carrying them around with me before, all day, every day. No wonder I felt like garbage. I don't feel "light" now, exactly, but I don't feel like I'm suffocating inside my own body anymore.
