This week I went to a work training on leadership, but most of the training was actually on behavioral psychology. One focus was on the S-curve of behavior and the impact of positive reinforcement (external and internal) and we also discussed how behavior is extinguished when the reinforcement disappears. The strongest motivators being positive immediate and certain consequences. The poorest motivators being positive future and uncertain.
I think this explains a lot. Eating calorie dense foods is experienced as positive immediate and certain, losing (or especially maintaining) is experienced as positive future and uncertain. We also may not necessarily associate the consequences of our actions (abstaining from cake or exercising) with the maintenance unless we continue to log food and exercise.
This also explains why support groups like Weight Watchers, TOPS, and even Reddit are so important-external positive reinforcement.
Just thought this might be useful for someone else to understand the benefits that we get from tracking and continuing to participate in support groups from a behavioral psych perspective.
