So I was the person who posted about their stretch marks and then deleted the post. I was having a rough day and tried on some clothes and saw myself in the fitting room at angles I had never seen before and was feeling really discouraged. Everything looked 10x worse than I had thought. And while it took me a while, I've lost 15 pounds so far & I'm 2lbs away from my mini-goal of 199! :)
Anyway, it's summer and for some reason I've just decided I'm going to wear all the tank tops and dresses and shorts my little heart desires. Usually I would cover up the areas where I have stretch marks (mainly upper arms) with a cardigan or only wear short sleeves, but this summer I've just decided it's not worth it! I'm going to be comfortable with myself no matter what. And I've realized a few things:
1) The world didn't end... no one has said anything to me about them. I don't get stared at on the street. If I feel like someone is looking at my arms, I shrug and wonder why they would even care.
2) I've gotten used to their appearance... this is still a work in progress, but by exposing the stretch marks more, they don't hold the same power over me. Now they're just marks. No more, no less. It's not such a shock to see them when I'm always seeing them.
3) It wasn't about the stretch marks, it was about the fat... my stretch marks aren't inherently bad. The only reason I didn't like them is because they are reminders that I used to be and still am overweight. But as I've slowly been changing that fact, the stretch marks don't hold the same power. I still haven't been able to show my stomach, but that's mainly because it's still pretty fat. Once I slim down, I'm sure the stretch marks will just be marks to me and I'll be okay showing off the body I worked hard for!
4) My opinion matters more than others' opinions... if I think my stretch marks look OK, guess what? They look OK. This is so big for me because I've had my arms out in front of my crush and while previously I would think that he now thinks less of me because I have stretch marks (lol), I realize my confidence in myself is what matters. If I don't mind them, why should anyone else?
Anyway, I've come so far from breaking down in a fitting room and just thought I'd share some of my thoughts. I realized today how much I've grown and I am really enjoying getting to know this body of mine a little better. Thanks for all of your support on that post even if I was too shy to own up to it!
