I bought a Withings/Nokia Body Scale at the beginning of my weight loss, and it was fantastic for seeing the drop in body fat. It even was within a percentage point of the two DEXAs I did at 6mos and 1yr.
BUT since I've moved on to maintenance and "recomping," the scale has only been showing me fluctuating between 32 and 34%, going down during the week after the days I worked out and my muscle water weight went up, and going up on the weekends when that dropped back off. I thought I just wasn't working hard enough and making progress, until this week.
Nokia pushed an update to the app for the scale that seemed to break the percentage reporting, instead giving body fat, water, and muscle mass in pounds, and it was enlightening: https://imgur.com/a/bbveZ9N. The scale thinks I gain 2 pounds of fat on the weekends even when my weight drops two pounds, and lose it when I work out. Even after I skipped my workout on Wednesday, it thought I gained 2lb of fat the next day, and dropped it back off when I worked out before the next weigh-in!! I wish it had a view with the muscle mass included, because it goes up 4 pounds when I work out and back down on the weekends.
So, fair warning to you if you're trying to recomp and using one of these scales to keep track of your progress. (I can't wait until my next DEXA!)
TLDR: BF% measuring scales have no idea what they're doing and think you gain fat when you lose water weight while at maintenance
