I programmed phone automations that physically prevent me from ordering food

My problem with losing weight is I order through food apps...a lot. I was finding that most of the time I was ordering food was because I'd get hungry and then convenience and impulse would take over, but this week, I used tech fully to my advantage to change this. I took a somewhat unconventional approach that uses my tech background:

  1. I set up iOS web restrictions that impose site blockers to deny my phone access to all food delivery websites (for the nerds out there like me, this block works via the underlying WebKit renderer, so this blocks these sites for all browsers I may install)
  2. I enabled Screen Time limitations on all food delivery apps I could think of with a limit of under 1 minute. This means if a food app is attempted to be used on my phone, there's no time to order before the system locks me out of the app (this persists even if they're deleted or re-installed)
  3. I programmed an iOS shortcut automation that, when I attempt to access a food app or site, force exits the app/site, auto launches a note filled with my goals and motivations, locks my phone after 10 seconds, and sends a push notification on my lock screen with a personalized motivational message of why I'm doing this in the first place. I'm not kidding.

I then took these to the max by having a friend set and keep the passcode that disables these so I can't bypass these self-imposed restrictions

Excessive? Very. Working? Absolutely. The results have been really surprising—my cravings for fast food have been curbed massively, it's like my brain has acknowledged the impossibility of acting on my cravings since I Fort Knoxed the phone and just doesn't try anymore. And since the only other option is getting up and ready just to go out and get food, especially late at night, it in general is much less appealing to me

After implementing this, I find myself cooking more, making healthier choices, and genuinely enjoying my home food routine. This strategy is wild but effective in terms of my weight loss and I hope others here who might be facing similar challenges can learn from this, as unconventional as it may be

Stay strong!
