I owe this forum a lot because it led me to download Conquering Fat Logic by Nadja Hermann. I've been reading and learning about nutrition for over 10 years but I've never seen a book address obesity so plainly and clearly. Everything I've learned about nutrition has been about which diet (vegetarian, paleo, vegan, keto, fat-free, oil-free, etc.) is better for your health and none of them so clearly just focused on obesity. Based on this book I have drastically changed my eating habits and am well on my way to losing the 37lbs I want to lose (I've already lost 7lbs!).
But my main question is about my kids. I have one child who has struggled with being underweight for several years, likely mostly due to medication she on. She's finally at a healthy, but low, weight and she thinks she can eat anything she wants. She's almost 13.
My other two kids are obese. They haven't been officially weighed at the doctor's office since last year at their birthdays, but their BMI for their age is in the 95th-99th percentile with their actual BMI being around 23. They're 9 (twins) about to be 10.
I don't know how to approach this with them. Up until I read Conquering Fat Logic, my approach was to do nothing but encourage healthy eating and portion and not talk about their weight. I thought maybe they would lose the weight when they start to grow taller. I certainly don't want to damage them for life or make them feel bad about themselves. I suspect their weight has 2 culprits; one is portion size and the other is the time they spend with their dad who frequently takes them out to eat and feeds them junk food.
Any suggestions for how to help kids lose weight and/or how to talk to them about why it's important to be at a healthy weight, without body shaming them? I also could use suggestions for how to talk to my oldest child who is thin but thinks she can eat all sorts of unhealthy junk food without repercussion. I want her to develop healthy eating habits so I'd like to start a conversation with her about that too.
