I have been in and out of slimming clubs since I have been about 14 years old (so for 25+ years).
Sometimes I lost weight, the highest amount being 35 pounds. Usually though I lost 7 pounds the first weeks, 2 or 3 the second and then slowed way down. The way I lost my weight after the first couple of weeks was by going to class and weighing, going home and binging for 3 or 4 days, then trying to starve myself so i wouldn't be up on the scales, then hopefully by not eating at all on the day of the weight in be down 1 pound. And thus is continued.
It was never truly sustainable for me. Although the support group setting is supposed to be there for good or bad, I found I craved the positive (hand clap for big loss) type of attention. The bad weeks when I knew i'd be up, I just didn't go!
And its not just me, time after time after time I would see people joining and the same pattern as I had continuing.
I think CICO is so successful is because it is just you accountable to you. No weigh ins, or sitting through class after class talking about the calories in wine and how people could drink more without going out their daily points. Or the incessant advertising of "approved" brand food - quark anyone?
I'm interested in other peoples thoughts on this!
