NSV -- "Walking, talking example."

There's a hiking area that my fiance and I go to nearly every weekend. It's a beautifully underappreciated local find, and a great excuse for us to have dates that don't just involve stuffing our faces.

Anyhow! We were going along one of the harder trails, plugging along and taking pictures of the newly bloomed flowers. We went by a family of three who were resting, saying hello to them as we passed. Two were of average size, with one woman being around 5'2" and 250lbs+, in her 30s. She was nearly bent over, breathing heavily.

Not far up ahead, we decided to take a break. They came by us and we waved. The bigger lady took a few minutes to stop and chat, and I was given the impression that she needed more time to catch her breath. I told her that we'd catch up with them later.

"I'm sure you'll be faster than us!"

Sure enough, we went zipping on by them shortly after. The woman was bent over again.

"I am a walking, talking example of why you shouldn't get fat."

She told us to take care of ourselves so we don't end up like her. The family members were apparently bringing her out there for exercise support to get her weight down. It really made me happy to see that they cared enough to take her health seriously and help her out.

It also occurred to me that I had forgotten how hard physical movement used to be for me 65 pounds ago. We've gotten to the point of being able to run those trails with ease, and I used to wheeze just walking down the street.

Today was great to be both proud of myself AND that woman on the trails. I have to admit to being a bit envious of her supportive family, but I'm so joyful that she doesn't have to do it alone like I did.
