Hello all: I am new to reddit and to the loseit forum, but a long time participant in online forums. I am 62 and over the past 18 months went from 275 to 230 through the the Fuhrman Eat To Live, tons of beans, tons of salad, fruit, all good stuff. I am not a vegan, but I eat no cheese, and maybe eat chicken once a week. I lost the 45 lbs in the first year and then spent 6 months happily plateaued, going between 230-234. After 6 months, I thought it time to saddle up again and started working out with a personal trainer and on my own. So about a month ago, I started a regimen is 2x week with the trainer, which kicks my behind, and then 4 x week of a hard push on the elliptical or stationary bike, getting my heart rate up to 70-80% of max and then doing some bodyweight type exercises, pushups, situps, etc. I also have been doing martial arts for 20 years, and I have a nice long taiji set that I do several times each week.
In the month or so that have started this workout regimen, I have gained several pounds. Over the 18 months of doing the Fuhrman, I have had a pretty good sense of what I need to do to lose a few lbs, so I have been doing that, but it has not changed the weight gain. And it comes in bizarre ways, like between yesterday and today, I am 2 lbs heavier! Obviously this is not just about fat gain or maybe not about fat gain at all (and believe me I have a very repeatable weighing process, so it is not time of day or anything like that). My trainer suggested I redistribute my calorie intake, and I have started journaling again using loseit (which is not part of the Furhman deal, one of the reasons I liked it so much...all the beans you can handle!). For a few weeks after starting, I probably ate a bit more as I felt as I had burned extra cal's so i could let things go a bit, but I am back on straight fuhrman + journaling and keeping it tight, which is why I am so mystified by the weight gain.
I have added in taking my waist measurements, and they have stayed the same or even maybe a bit smaller (like a centimeter or two). And I definitely see changes in my musculature and my endurance is better. But I had taken so much pride in losing those 45 lbs, and to see it reverse is making me a little crazy.
Like so many people, I take in too many calories after dinner, so that is something I will work on. I also don't drink enough water, so I will work on that as well. But I am looking for people who have had similar experiences and advice/support.
Nice to be here, you seem like a good group of folks.
