An idea/theory why set point theory can seem so compelling - what do you think?

Hey,

this is just a thought I recently had - anyone who's looked into weightless has probably come across the "set point theory" - the idea that bodies just have a weight they want to be at and whenever you diet, the body "panics" and sets the set point higher, somehow 'burning less calories' now so your weight is destined to rise, forever. This is an explanation often given why people who go off their diets not only regain, but often end up fatter than before.

Now, I, like most of this sub, generally think that this is wrong, that weight is mostly determined by CICO and that from a biological, evolution-based perspective, it just makes sense that our bodies are always operating at their maximum efficiency and if they somehow could lower our caloric output while keeping our body temperature and movement the same, they would. A "set point" also doesn't make much sense for much the same reason, getting too fat for hunting and hiking during periods of abundance can't have been very advantageous.

So why do a lot of people regain more weight than they lost after a diet once they return to their "normal" eating patterns?

I think some of it has to do with a make-up-for-lost-time treat yo'self mentality, sure. But I also think that in fact, people who are overweight are just always gaining, sometimes simply by keeping their eating habits that made them overweight in the first place the same while continually expending less energy as they age. So if you diet for a year or two and then return to the same eating patterns you had before the diet, while also having lost muscle during the diet, plus indulging a little, it's no wonder you'll end up heavier after it despite essentially doing the same things you were doing before the diet.

Does that make sense? What do you think?

Signed, someone who's currently at her second-highest weight again due to not caring at all what she ate for 8 months. Gah. (It's okay, BMI is only 25. But it used to be 21! ><)
