What can really effect weight loss?

I am interested in hearing anyone's experience with sleep issues or birth control impacting their weight loss journey. A little bit about me: I'm 5'7" and 165 pounds. I don't necessarily look overweight, but I know based on my BMI that I am. I've been eating about 1500-1600 calories a day (logging in MFP and using a scale) and haven't lost much weight (3 lbs total, been trying seriously since January 1). I walk to work (about 1 hour round trip) and work an office job, but one that requirements to talk frequently around campus for meetings. Additionally, I go to the gym for about an hour 3 times a week.

I recently switched BCP forms (from IUD to pill) and noticed an upward shift in my weight even though my diet hasn't changed. I've heard you can gain weight on the pill because of increased appetite or water retention. Anyone experience this? Additionally, for years I've been struggling with sleeping well. I was just diagnosed with sleep apnea and was told that sleep issues can impact weight loss. Has anyone had this happen to them?

I've been trying to lose weight for years. I was 145 lbs in December 2016. By March 2017, I'd gained 25 lbs, which I maintained through August 2017. From September 2017 to January 2017, I lost it all, but then gained it all back within 4 months. I was really confused by this gain because I was walking over 15,000 steps a day and wasn't eating any differently.

My diet now is very stable, I use a scale and MFP, but I haven't lost the weight. While I know that CICO is the only way to control your weight and that I must be doing something wrong (maybe I need to re calibrate my food scale?), I do wonder if people have experiences with BC or sleep disorders or even significant stress challenging their ability to lose weight. Also, if anyone had these issues corrected, did it impact your ability to lose weight? Was it suddenly easier? Or harder? Did you find it changes your appetite?
