I’ve always been extremely squeamish with blood my entire life. And by squeamish, I mean that when I see blood on my skin I promptly black out. I remember being as young as 7 and skinning my knee and passing out. I am not afraid of needles, I just know when I see blood it knocks me out somewhat.
I used to give blood more regularly in college. It made me extremely uncomfortable, but as long as I looked away, I could power through and there wasn’t a big problem. As I started to put on weight it got harder and harder for phlebotomists to find my veins. I know that thin people can have difficult veins and heavy people can have easy veins, but the transition for me was directly due to me gaining weight.
I had to get blood drawn for health reasons quite a few times in a row a few years back and every time it was worse and worse. At the time, I didn’t want to acknowledge that it was completely due to my body being fatter and my veins not very visible. The major problem was that I started getting stuck a few different times to find the vein. And on top of that, they would have to move the needle around in my arm to help at times. I’d start to black out even if they were just drawing a simple vial of blood. I stopped donating blood entirely.
I’ve since lost a good amount of the weight that I originally put on through healthier eating and have been working out consistently. I’ve been happy with a lot of things from the change, but yesterday was awesome! I decided to bite the bullet and donate, and it was the easiest process I’ve ever had. She asked what arm I preferred and I said “Whatever is easier, sometimes people have a hard time with my veins”. The phlebotomist looked at me and said, “your veins shouldn’t be a problem for anyone.” She stuck me so easily! My donation took 4 minutes and 50 seconds. I still had to sit for 15 minutes afterward and pound some Powerade zeroes and eat some cheese whisps, but I didn’t black out.
Im really excited that I’ve gained this ability again!
