Apologies for the extremely inane question.
I’ve heard lots of people say that 1200 cal is the lower limit of daily intake (for a woman), otherwise you risk malnutrition.
I’ve also seen lots of people do extended water fasts (e.g. 10, 20, over 30 days - see r/fasting), where they are essentially taking in 0 cal per day.
How do I reconcile these two seemingly opposing ideas? Surely if it is safe to take in 0 cal per day (like they literally just have water, black coffee, green tea and electrolytes), it’d be safe to take in 500-1000 cal per day?
Or is there something about the mechanism of fasting that allows one to subsist on fewer than 1200 cal per day?
