How do you motivate someone else to lose weight?

I have a friend who says they want to lose weight. I’ve known them since forever basically, and they say they want to lose weight (I never bring it up) and tell them a little about eating healthy and a healthy lifestyle in general. This friend is very over weight (I’m a head taller and they weigh much more), and refuses to accept that they’ll have to make changes in order to lose weight. If I say the best beverage to drink day to day is water, they’ll say “but I can’t live without milk, and it’s not like a glass a day makes a difference”, and no it wouldn’t if that was the only thing they indulged in and it was accounted for, but they refuse to deny themselves of anything in order to lose the weight. I’m not sure what to do about this, I don’t even know if I should say something. I’ve suggested going to a registered dietitian to get help if they’re serious about this but they just don’t come around to it.

I don’t really know what to do, I want to help. I’ve never been clinically over weight but I’ve had pretty bad habits and was increasing in weight steadily for a while but was able to turn that around and am on my way back to my original weight. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I can do to encourage their efforts without being mean or smothering? Should I try to encourage at all?
