I hate running. It sucks. In order for me not to cramp up, I have to fill my lungs to capacity like a bellows and then exhale it all out. I sweat a metric shit ton after 5 minutes of anything. I've never been particularly athletic, and I've wanted to feel empowered by my body for a long time.
I've used the C25K app on iOS on and off for two years. It's been difficult to stay motivated until I made the firm decision to lose weight and to run 5K by the end of 2018, and even then I haven't been consistent. I've had roadblocks - cold weather, depression, and terrible shin splints - which made it even more difficult. But, I tried not to take shortcuts. If I couldn't complete a run for whatever reason, I would clear my progress for that day and try it again another day. If I hadn't been running for a month plus, I would pull my progress in the app back by a week's worth in order to work my way back up. I hated it, but it got easier and actually a little rewarding after quite awhile.
Before today my running record was 30 minutes nonstop. If I were to run my standard pace and complete 5K, I'd have to beat my old record by eight minutes.
I did it! It was a slog, and I could barely walk myself to my car from the gym after, and I had to hold the treadmill rails for a good amount of time, but I did it. I'm more proud of myself for completing the goal rather than the feat itself.
It's okay to hate running. Even then, know that if you are persistent, you can accomplish things with your body that you had not thought you could do. It doesn't matter how many breaks you take, as long as you hold yourself accountable for them and put your ego aside. Thank you everyone for daily inspiration here!
