Is it possible to lose weight and keep it off? / Brain Over Binge

I reached my goal weight in August and had a rocky time with maintenance because I hadn’t planned for it/made sustainable changes. After a period of binging, I bought Brain Over Binge and I’m at the part where she’s talking about the animal brain and how 95% of diets fail and 98% of people gain the weight back in 5 years. I find that strangely discouraging coming from her—the main message of the book seems to be “Just Don’t Binge.” Mindfulness, detachment, and reasoning.

I’m not really sure how to read these sections about how people are biologically doomed to fail! Has anyone else read it and come up with their own solutions? I’ve gained some weight and I need/want to get back to where I feel comfortable—and the first step was addressing my new habit of binging—but the message is overwhelmingly disempowering! What are the chances that people can lose weight and keep it off?
