First post on this sub, but I've been following for years. Over the last few years, my weight has been creeping ever upward. At the beginning of the year, I was creeping up to 300 lbs, and realized that if I wanted to be able to do the things I actually want to do (play with my kids without getting winded, go hiking, live a long life, etc.), I would need to make some pretty serious changes in my life.
I started with exercising on my stationary bike for about 20 minutes a day. Then, after a few weeks, I added in tracking calories with MFP. After a few more weeks of that, I started eating calories at a deficit (I think in the first week of February). As I lost weight, I started being able to handle more and more exercise. By the time my kids were out of school for the summer, I was able to make the 14 mile ride from my house to work.
Today, I did my longest continuous ride on my bike: 42 miles! If you had told me in January that I would be able to ride my bike for over 2 hours, I would have said you were crazy.
The biggest change for me has been the realization that I'm not willing to do anything as just a short-term fix. Instead, I've been putting a focus on doing things that I am willing to do long term. I admire people who cut out carbs, fat, processed food in general, etc., but I'm not willing to do that long term. I still go out to eat with my wife once or twice a week, but if I go over for the day, I make sure that I am under my calorie goals on other days.
It has been a great journey so far, and I just wanted to share!
