I understand that not everyone lives in a metropolitan area which has a good economic condition and plenty of resources. I am in no way implying that this applies to everyone else in this subreddit. It's just something I'm happy about and want to talk about. I'm sure many of you can relate because I imagine that many people in this subreddit live in a similar area as I do.
I spent about $50 on food today (including things that were for my husband)! Sometimes I spend even less! Next week, I'm making quinoa bowls with fajita-style bell peppers, sauteed chickpeas with chili powder, and black beans. The quinoa was the only part of this dish that was a little bit expensive, but I got store brand and I only get it every once in a while. The rest of it is items that cost less than a dollar. I'm also making "Greek" chicken bowls with oregano chicken, turmeric rice, tzatziki (one plain Chobani yogurt, a clove of garlic, half of a cucumber), and sauteed broccoli with garlic and butter. The chicken was about $6 but I'll freeze half of it, I've been working on one bag of rice for about half of a year now, and the other things were all about $1 per unit or pound. I bought a few Brown Cow yogurts, apples, and bananas. I've been working on the same jar of peanut butter for a really long time now, and a bag of pretzels and other crunchy snacks last a really long time in my house due to the fact that I actually only eat one or two servings instead of the entire bag in one sitting. And I did splurge on Larabars, but that's unusual for me.
When I was obese, I used to spend over $100 on food per week. My portion sizes were at least two or three times as big as I'm eating now. I was eating a lot more meat and cheese, and far fewer vegetables. I was always spending money on some sort of dessert, which I ate multiple times per week and sometimes even multiple times per day. Now I eat dessert maybe once a week, and it's usually a far more reasonable portion that I would have eaten 3 years ago.
Sometimes, the extra money feels better than the weight loss. :)
