Two years ago I weighed 47 pounds more than I do today. I was depressed and I was far from proud of the way I looked. A little voice told me that I needed to take a step in the right direction. The step seemed odd, but I trusted that the change might help. It might sound strange, but I started using lotion on my arms and legs. Stick with me here and I'll try to explain.
It seemed practical at first. My skin looked ashy, and that seemed unprofessional for work. But the practice did more than fix my ashy skin over time. I learned to love my arms and legs again and to stop ignoring what was happening to them and how they were making me feel. The size of my legs had doubled my pant size. The size of my arms made me self-conscious enough to only buy shirts with 3/4-length sleeves. Massaging my limbs routinely gave me more compassion for them, more compassion for myself and the events that had resulted in my gaining so much weight.
I’ve continued the practice over this two year journey of weight loss, and I wanted to let this sub know, that I believe having compassion for myself has been pivotal to my success. Deciding to accept my body as it is through the entire process, right from the beginning, has been one of the things that's given me strength to stick with it. My ritual might not be the thing that helps you do that, but I hope the idea will inspire you to adopt your own way of accepting your body as it is, both now and in the future.
