Interesting article in Medium here.
The gist of it is this. . . Resisting temptation requires energy and this is why it is easier to ignore the candy aisle when you have eaten, because your glycogen reserves aren’t depleted. You literally have the energy to fight the cravings. This is why non dieters have an easier time ignoring tempting treats because they haven’t been restricting. Emotional battles take a great deal of energy.
The article also explains why we go, “Screw it” and eat everything in sight when we are “bad” or “cheat”, it is basically an emotional response that we literally don’t have the energy to fight because we are hungry and don’t have the glycogen reserves to resist it.
My take away from the article is this:
-
Don’t go into a high temptation situation like a party or bakery when you are hungry at all, or emotionally spent, stressed, etc. it is a combination for failure. Eat something filling and satiating first instead of our tendency to starve ourselves then go overboard.
-
Out of sight is out of mind.
-
If you are having issues with cravings or binges, you probably have too high of a deficit and you are defeating your diet because you don’t have the energy to resist temptation.
