Are you "chasing the flavor?"

I just read a great concept from a book about mindful eating-- the author is talking about how our tastebuds "adjust" to the taste of whatever food we're eating-- so the first couple Doritos, or bites of cheesecake, or sips of iced coffee taste the best. She goes on to say, "It's for this reason that paying attention to moment-to-moment changes in taste satisfaction is so powerful, but most of us just aren't aware at all. So we don't pay attention, and we may even chase the flavor, continually eating to try to recapture the pleasure of the first few bites, which is impossible." Man, did that hit home. Just a few days ago I was eating and eating from a giant bucket of caramel corn I brought home from a beach vacation. I was half-conscious of the thought that it didn't even really taste that good anymore, but I kept shoveling it in. Now I can remind myself that I am just trying to duplicate the pleasure of those first few bites, and try to be happy with a small serving. (And yes, I do know it's a bad idea to eat straight out of a bag/box/carton/giant bucket!) Quote source: "The Joy of Half a Cookie" by Jean Kristeller
