tl;dr: I made some changes to a healthier lifestyle recently and now I'm peeing ALL the time — and water seems to go right through me.
6'2" 215 lb male.
Four points to start:
- I know frequent urination is a symptom of diabetes. I definitely have sensitive blood sugar — when I miss a meal or don't eat right, I get hypoglycemic symptoms. But I had a blood panel done last month that my doctor didn't feel was concerning, and I feel great on my current diet.
- I already supplement with Nuun electrolyte tablets in my water, in case the electrolyte balance is an issue
- I don't feel dehydrated or thirsty all the time.
- I have an appointment with a urologist next week to rule out any other issues.
With these points out of the way, here's my story:
I was fairly health-conscious until last year, when life got in the way and I slipped off the wagon. This culminated in an incredibly stressful summer where I was living out of hotels for work, eating 90% at restaurants, and working 80-100 hours weeks on a big project. Out of frustration and excess stress, I was doing brutal daily workouts, thinking it would help — but this just jacked up my cortisol. I gained about 15 pounds and currently look/feel bad.
Recently I committed to rebooting with a bunch of common-sense changes:
- Reduced alcohol, caffeine, sugar
- I eat 2200-2400 cal/day on a 40/40/20 P/C/F split. No gluten (causes digestive issues & eczema).
- Prioritizing sleep
- Meditating 20 minutes/day
I also switched to 5-6 smaller meals per day, spaced 2-3 hours apart. I know IF is popular but I've tried a bunch of different fasting techniques and always crashed out — whereas on 5-6 regularly timed meals I feel incredible.
This was a lot all at once, but I've been able to make the mindset flip and really stick with it. Over the last couple of weeks I have FELT great. More energy, upbeat, sleeping great, digestion working great. People are commenting on noticing a change in me. Obviously 2 weeks is a little soon for weight/clothing changes, but the feeling is awesome.
The one thing I've noticed is that I have been peeing a LOT. Like, getting up 4-5 times at night to pee.
Liquids seem to go through me, too — for example this morning I drank a 16oz water and a 12 oz La Croix over the course of 3 hours — and I've probably peed 8 times in that time period alone.
Has this happened to anyone else? It's confusing that it's associated with all these positive lifestyle changes. However, it does seem that cortisol/stress is related to water retention. I'm wondering if dramatically lowering stress levels is causing some water wait drain or something.
