This is a weekly thread for anyone on r/LoseIt that is thinking about running, is starting to run, or who runs regularly. All levels are welcome - come and share.
I am guest posting this as the usual awesome poster /u/ificandoit is a new father (or about to be one) and taking a break.
Goals
Any pursuit usually has a goal. We are all engaged in our endeavors in pursuit of an achievement or victory. Running is no different here.
Goals can be of all sorts when it comes to running.
Endurance
For many just starting out on LoseIt it is an endurance goal at first. Run for a mile. Run for 20 minutes. Complete /r/C25K. Run a 5K. Run 10 miles, a marathon, an ultra. Once you start down this road, you find there's always a longer duration or distance running goal on the horizon.
Endurance along with strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, mobility, balance, and reflexes make up fitness. Often we think of being fit as being just one or two of these parts of fitness. All are equal, really, in your fitness pursuit. But endurance is a majorly keystone element of fitness. The ability to endure exerting yourself running or some other incredibly hard exercise is helpful across the board. Even strength training benefits from endurance training.
Speed
For many, running is about getting faster. There's all manner of speed goals. A 30 minute 5K, a 75 minute 10K, a 90 minute half marathon, an 11 minute mile. It's not about some set number, it's about beating your past performance. Going a little faster than you went before.
Training
Regardless of your goals, you get there by training. Running each week working towards your goals. Often it takes 4+ weeks to see steps up in performance.
What are your goals? How are you training?
Checking this week on your short term and long term running goals? Are you wrapping up /r/C25K? Training for a 35 mile ultra? Are you looking to finish in a particular time? What training plan are you using?
Weekly check-in
How did you do this week? Training going well? Did you do well with the heat? Did you run any races?
