For the longest time I had the worst relationship with food. I was hungry all the time, I never turned down an offer for food, and I figured I'd always 'treat' myself for everything since college has been extra stressful to me. I'm also a huge snacker - I'd do hours of mindless snacking. So gained almost 70 lbs in 2 years and was wondering - what happened?
My sister is about the same height as me (5'5") and pretty skinny (115 lbs). She doesn't eat healthy, is more sedentary than I am, and I notice her in the kitchen snacking a lot.
I just spent 3 months living back at home with her and noticed all her eating habits. My sister eats only when she is hungry. If we eat dinner and she becomes 'full' she doesn't finish her plate. I grew up with the mentality that you 'must' always clear your plate or else you'll waste food. She snacks a couple times but really only nibbles bits of the snacks. I remember going out at a restaurant with her, she finished all her food in the restaurant but when we were getting coffee HOURS later after a day's worth of shopping she is still full. She also doesn't eat until lunch and stops eating around dinner. I grew up with the mentality that 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day'.
So for most of the summer, I mimicked my sister's eating habits. I quit excessively snacking (ate her portions), and only ate when I was TRULY hungry. It was HELL the first couple weeks. I was hungry all the time, very lethargic, and grumpy. I wanted food out of habit (e.g. I typically snack from 3-5 pm), but I couldn't have them. Over time I've gotten better at reading hunger cues from my body. Am I REALLY hungry? Do I really need to eat the entire chocolate bar or can I just survive with 2 small squares of it? You get the point.
I returned back to college and my friends & boyfriend immediately noticed a change in my eating habit. I was not hungry all the time, I never completely finished my food, I only ate when I really need too. I don't eat breakfast (never been a breakfast person) - just plain black coffee. I recently started IF & low-carb/keto and will be incorporating CICO soon. I feel great! I eat about 1/3 of what I used to and I feel satisfied! I've truly become more aware of how my 'skinny friends' ate. I have no idea what I did but the fact that I feel good with 2 meals a day and little to minimal snacking is amazing. I would have never been able to do this before. I'm down 22 pounds since May and finally hit onederland!
