tl;dr -- 2 days each way driving, down and back, 6 days there, resisted (most) temptations, maintained moderation, walked a shit-ton, kept hydrated, lost 3.4 pounds!!
For me the difficulty traditionally starts on the drive down (we have done NY to Disney 6 or 7 times over the last 10 summers). It's so EASY just to do drive-thrus or get Subway for the car, or snack on crap. Driving time is idle time. But my wife (who is on the same journey I am, and has lost the same 45-50 pounds over the past 8 months as I have) and I packed like bosses: For the drive down, we bagged baby carrots, cubed cantaloupe, and a couple pounds each of grapes and apples. Plus, I had a few bananas, Fiber One Protein bars and Clif bars, plus baggies of diced grilled chicken breast. I also packed small baggies of Ocean Spray reduced sugar dried cranberries, and Mariani dried sour cherries. And I drank waters, Powerade Zero, and caffeine-free diet clear diet sodas. I did snag a McD's soft serve on the way down, because yum. But I stayed observant to the packed goods besides.
At WDW, we did NOT do the meal plan. The meal plan is delicious and easy, but also absurdly expensive and far too likely to lead to overeating. We had a DVC suite with a small kitchen, so we brought down some ground turkey to make pasta sauce and turkey burgers, and I also brought some BJs store brand canned chicken breast as well as some reduced sodium Progresso tomato-basil soup.
I also brought several packs of gum. I find that when I chew, I am less likely to eat, since I don't want conflicting tastes in my mouth.
We would eat early breakfasts in the room. I would give myself a carb heavy 500-600 calorie breakfast (bagel and a protein bar, for example) and power me thru the early morning hours, since I knew we'd be walking a few miles in the 94 degree heat before eating again, and I took a cooler backpack into the park with my snacks and lunch. Aside from drinking a half liter of water every hour or two, this is kind of what a typical day's munching would look like (after my 7 am breakfast):
- 9 am - snack baggie full of cubed cantaloupe
- 10 am - apple, one snack baggie of dried fruit
- 12:30 pm - lunch = baggie of cubed chicken, cup of grapes, baggie of baby carrots, one small salty snack (100-calorie pack of Goldfish, pretzels, or even Pringles if I was feeling punchy)
- 2 pm - second baggie of dried fruit
- 4:00 or 5:00 leave the park to make dinner back at the suite
Dinners consisted of soup, or possibly some kind of low fat meat (turkey, ham) sandwich on 45-calorie bread, more fruit, and one or more of the aforementioned packed snacks.
But I did not deprive/punish myself!!! I bought a huge Disney ice cream one day, and we went to Erin McKenna's allergy-free bakery in Disney Springs another day.
Here's the part I'm totally over the moon about: We even went to a "character" buffet dinner and I survived! I tried a nibble of this and that, little bites, licks and tastes of a few various things (I tried some of my son's prime rib, chicken fingers, fries), but my actual dinner consisted of 8-10 of the LARGEST strawberries I'd ever seen, a pile of grapes and cantaloupe, and for my protein I must have eaten 12-16 ounces of DELICIOUS turkey from the carvery (no skin), 4 fat slices, and a tiny bit of mash (no gravy). I drank Diet Pepsi, and got up and left when I felt sated.
OK, I did nibble off a couple of my kids' desserts. But just a skosh.
One night later in the trip, we dined at Pecos Bill's on property, and I tried one of those new Beyond Burgers (not impressed, I like Boca and Morningstar Farms products better) with vegan pepper jack, wrapped in big Bibb lettuce leaves, with sides of chips and black beans. That was probably the most indulgent thing I think I ate, meal-wise. But we must have walked 15,000 steps a day.
Lather, rinse, repeat. And the drive home was the same as the drive down. 1250 miles, a lot of fluids, fruit, and lean proteins.
And you know what? I didn't feel all that deprived. True, I did miss the old Meal Plan days when I would go to Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe at Magic Kingdom and for one meal get a half rack of ribs, half a rotisserie chicken, two sides, a drink, and a dessert, but I brought down a variety of things that I liked and were relatively inexpensive and easily portable, so I always had something satisfying on hand. And I did not punish myself with TOTAL deprivation so I never felt bitter or cranky.
And this morning, I weighed myself, and after 10 days gone, I was DOWN 3.4 pounds. Usually, I gain between 5-10 pounds during a week at Disney. I am over the moon!!!!!!!! :-)
So it can be done, people! I am a lazy glutton par excellence, and if I can do it, ANYONE can!!!!!
Woo-hoo!!!!!!
