Does jump-rope burn any more calories than just jumping for an identical duration?

I am overweight, and many have suggested skipping rope as it is a wonderful way to burn calories relatively fast. But I can not, for the life of me learn how to do it, given that I weigh too much to elegantly jump that tiny amount to let the rope slide by. I put too much an effort, breaking the rhythm, or too little, and end up falling.

Does jumping for the same duration not burn a similar, if slightly lower (fine by me), amount of calories? Apart from the fact that your arms also have some work to do when skipping, is there anything that puts skipping considerably high above jumping?

Thank you so much in advance for clarifying. This means a lot to me.
