Today MFP tells me I have logged in for 365 days! One whole year!
A quick bit about me: I was born fat! A 10lber in fact! I continued on to being a chubby toddler and child, a fat teenager and an obese adult. I have literally never been a normal healthy weight in my life. I have lost weight a few times, but it never stuck and I always fell off the wagon and regained all the weight and more. So many Mondays where the diet would be over by lunchtime. The word diet seemed to trigger the urge to binge usually like I thought I was going to starve to death!
Just over a year ago I was basically a junk food vegetarian... I had been for over 8 years. Then I decided to become vegan. I didn't do it for weight loss and I will emphasise you can be a fat vegan! (I have and always will be vegan for the animals)You can live on Oreos and mcdonalds fries if you wish (the fries are vegan in the UK in case anyone is wondering).
In those first 2-3 weeks of being vegan I realised I felt better and less sluggish, probably due to the increased vegetables. I also realised I could have large evening meals for not many calories because of the vegetables. Im very much a volume eater! I need a large evening meal or there's a good chance I will binge in the evening and eat anything/everything. But I did, and still do, eat anything in moderation. I work it into my calories somehow.
So one year ago I decided to start tracking my calories. I weighed in at 320lbs! I'm female, was 31 at the time and my height is 5'8. It was easier than I thought! I was satisfied at every meal. I also started drinking more water instead of living off of black coffee!
As far as exercise goes I started out doing maybe a 2.5-3 mile walk a couple of times a week. I'd be hot and sweaty and sore feet when I was done. One year later and my normal walk is around 6 miles, I do 10 when I have the time. I'm hoping to work up to 17 miles so I can walk to the nearest city... Just so I can say I did it! Walking is also great for mental health... Gives me time to work things over in my mind. But I also do various workouts on YouTube (hiit/kettlebell/aerobics style things), I now cycle and swim.
This morning I weighed in at 200.6lbs. For a loss of 119.4lbs in one year. My BMI went from 48.6 (so very very very very obese!) to 30.5 (I'm about 4lbs away from being overweight!). I have went from a UK26 to a UK16 in clothes. My life is infinitely better now than it was a year ago! I have so much more energy. I can keep up with my 10 year old daughter. We do things together we never could have before. My goal weight is 160,so about 40lbs more to go. I can't wait to be "normal". And for the first time I know I will do it. Everything I do now is so routine. I don't feel deprived. This isn't a diet. I'm just living a healthy life!
Some of my favourite before and after comparison are:
Resting heart rate before was low 90s! It is now around 60.
I can now sleep on my back because my big butt doesnt make my back bend weirdly! ๐๐
Top walking speed used to be 2.5mph, that was as fast as my fat legs could go! Now my comfortable walking speed is 3mph, top speed when needed is about 3.8mph.
Used to be so tired and yet still couldn't sleep. Now I have energy all day but I'm asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. I think I have my active life to thank for that.
I get chub rub much less! ๐
There's no magic to this... Eat your vegetables, drink your water, and be as active as you can be comfortably!
And here's some photos! I see the difference in my face but I struggle to see the difference in my body... Guess my brain just hasn't caught up with my body yet!
