... but it doesn't matter!
Obligatory before and after photos: 1 and 2
7 years ago I was so unhappy, and unfit, and uncomfortable in my own skin when I found /r/loseit and decided to enact simple change: eat less and move more. I vowed to eat veggies every day, and get some sort of physical activity every 2 days. That first year I lost 60 pounds, and was completely unrecognizable to those who hadn't seen me in awhile. I more or less maintained that weight loss up until this past January, when I decided to finally try to hit my initial goal weight of ~150lbs, or size 6 pants (I started at a size 18).
I have celebrated my healthiversary every year, because it gives me cause to reflect and appreciate the positive changes I've made, and maintained, especially at those times when I've gained back a few pounds or lost motivation. I went from the ultimate couch potato to someone who walks to and from work daily (~16 km) and does active hobbies like scuba diving, kickboxing, and hiking. I may look pretty different than how I used to, but the change within has been the ultimate success.
Honestly, when people ask me how I succeeded, I say that incremental change, and persistence are really the key to success. Weight fluctuates, your appearance will change over time no matter what, but if you can take mastery over improving your functional health and being the best version of yourself that you can be, the rest kind of just follows. Rather than focus on how my thighs are so big and how I'll never achieve that instagram-level thigh gap, I think about how my body can carry me up a mountain, or how I'm less out of breath climbing stairs than I was a week ago.
So it's been 7 years, and I haven't hit my goal yet. But the lifestyle change I have achieved is more than I ever imagined it could be, and if this post can help inspire even one person, I'll feel like I've paid forward the inspiration I found in loseit back as a 240 lb girl who just wanted to be happy.
