I was obese over half my life, never played sports in school, which was one of the biggest regrets of my life. By the time I was 19 in January 2017 I was 298. Previously I tried seeing a dietitian a couple years before in 2015, but I only gained weight and the dietitian didn’t want to see me anymore which upset my parents. My mom gave it one last shot, and took me to see a Doctor of Osteopathy, or Bariatric Doctor. Which is when everything, the doctor had me go take a glucose test followed by two blood tests, all this while my grandma was dying of Liver Cancer, (she passed away February 2017) After the tests, I had insulin resistance, Necrobiosis lipoidic (skin was turning brown) around my neck and was pre-diabetic all at the age of 19, after seeing the doctor again, he bluntly told me you can either lose this weight now. Or be almost 400lbs and diabetic before you graduate from college. I told him I wanted to lose the weight, I didn’t want to end up like my dad, who was diabetic in his 20s but now is one of the fittest 40 year olds you’ll see, (it was too late for him) With college, My grandma dying, and the mental toll it had on me was really really rough to say the least. I wasn’t happy. The doctor had me get on 1500 calories a day along with 1 phentermine tab a day. By June 2017 I had lost 40lbs, and weighed around 260. After that the Necrobiosis lipoidic around my neck was completely gone, fast forward to January 2018 and I was 240lbs. I decided to hit the gym, before, I never really worked out to be completely honest. After having a few dull periods of going and not going I was 230lbs by March, that’s when I really pushed my self and started going 3-4 times a week. Started by running a mile as my warm up, and going on elliptical bikes for 15 miles or an hour, and repeat. By July 2018, I was 189lbs and lost over 100lbs the Doctor was very pleased with my effort, he said I saved thousands of dollars by not doing a gastric bypass surgery, I lost 24% of my body weight while the average gastric bypass patient loses about 25% which made me really happy and more confident. I’m currently visiting family in Europe and have hit a plateau, I noticed I was eating only 500-1000 calories per day for a couple weeks with the exercise, and was stuck, my goal weight is 170lbs. I increased my intake to 1500 calories and finally started losing weight. My plan is to start lifting when I return to the states and I hope to reach my goal by the time I turn 21 in December. With all the weight loss I went from XXL/XXXL to L/M and From a 52’ waist to a 34’ waist, my mile run went from 18 minutes down to 8 minutes, my self confidence is higher than ever and I’m much happier. Stretch marks and lose skin is there. It’s something I’ve come to accept, I use it as a reminder of what I’ve been through, It’s not as bad as I thought. I was told it’s not as bad if you’re young, I’ll see where the road takes me and if surgery is needed I’ll do it, but I won’t think about til’ after college graduation when I have a real job. All of this was just a dream a couple years ago, now it’s a reality, seriously to all those who have the same aspirations. Just do it, I know it sounds cliché, but if you make it a part of your life, it’ll all be smooth sailing from there, just exercise, track, and eat the right things.
