For decades, I have hated shorts and skirts. I have very sensitive skin, a fairly narrow pelvis, and a condition where my sweat glands don’t always work the way they should (instead of sweating, I get a type of heat rash that looks like sunburn blisters. I overheat easily. It’s suuuper sexy). I used to refuse to walk in the heat because the chub rub was so bad I would sometimes get actual open sores. This occurred even when I was at my lower weights. I was convinced that this was not a weight related issue. I definitely believed that “even skinny girls get chub rub” and “thigh gap is about your pelvis not your thighs” Well, I still partially believe that. I am now at my lowest ever weight as an adult and I still don’t have “thigh gap.” But, yesterday I walked 10 miles in short shorts, followed by another 5 in a skirt (without bike shorts underneath) all in pretty serious heat and humidity, and NO CHUB RUB!!! Not only that, but no heat rash at all! And, I sweat (sweated? What is the past tense of sweat?) a normal amount. Not too little, not to much. Did my weight loss fix my skin condition? Probably not. We’ll see what happens when it gets to 90. Maybe it’s because I have less weight to carry around to work up a sweat. Maybe it’s because my healthier diet eliminated an allergy I didn’t know I had. Maybe it’s because even though I don’t have “thigh gap” there’s still a lot less skin-on-skin contact to cause chafing. I don’t care! I just feel like I’ve been completely liberated to adventure however, whenever, and wearing whatever I want to!
