Today I saw the other side of discrimination.

I can’t remember a time when I walked into a “normal” clothing store and didn’t get That Look. Y’all know the one: That Look they give you because you don’t belong, you clearly don’t fit their clothing, and you’re offending them personally by taking up space in their store.

The only thing worse than That Look is the moment you dematerialise and suddenly become invisible to all employees. You magically reappear once you step outside.

So I’ve avoided “normal stores” for years, up until recently. I’ve so far lost 95lb and I’m now in that grey area where I fit the small end of plus stores, and the high end of normal ones.

So I needed a new top. I went to my favourite plus size store, although not the location I usually shop at, so they don’t know me. I was first ignored, then dismissed, and even when she finally served me, she didn’t let that stop her conversation with another clerk. When I asked a different clerk about the top I had in my hand, she asked my size. I informed her I’d lost weight and I didn’t know my current size - she actually sneered at me.

Because how dare I lose weight? It seems I have betrayed the fat fraternity.

I have to be honest, I did not expect this. I have never had anything but warm and friendly encounters with plus store workers. I didn’t imagine for a moment that they had their own version of That Look.

I then went across the mall to a normal store. I was greeted warmly, assisted happily, and treated like a normal person.

I suppose this switch to the other side could be termed a NSV, but it makes me a little sad. I guess you can be a judgemental asshole at any size - no weight requirements. :(
