I'm not a very good cyclist, but I wanted to get more exercise and pay less for gas, so about a month ago, I started biking to work. At first it was really hard, and I only managed two days the first week, but I'm getting better! At my speed, it takes me around 25 minutes and 100 calories each way. I'm feeling more confident as a cyclist, and I'm getting so close to being able to cycle all the way up this one big hill (I still run out of energy about 2/3 of the way up and have to get off and push).
I just want to say that I was terrified of cycling in the city when I first started, but I'm already more comfortable, and my balance has improved. Cycling can be super scary, especially if your city isn't bike friendly (mine isn't great), but I planned my route very carefully to stay away from traffic and practiced it on a Sunday morning before trying it for real, and these things helped me have more confidence. Plus burning through an extra ~1000 calories per week is a big victory for me. I've been at a plateau with only 5lb to go to my goal weight, so by keeping my calorie intake steady, I'm hoping this will help me get there.
If you have any tips on how to be a better cyclist, please share them with me! I really want to learn how to take one hand off the handlebar without falling over.
