I want to give some support to all people who might have a harder time losing weight than most.

Hi :) I am 22/F, autistic, and I have low self esteem and anxiety/depression issues. I have been at least chubby since I was a child. Starting at 14 years old, I have tried countless times to lose weight. Sometimes I lost quite a few pounds, sometimes not even a pound. But every one of those attempts, I quit after a while. Due to my autism and mental health issues, I am really perfectionist and have a tendency to overthink everything. I also have much difficulty seeing the greater picture, being a black and white thinker and things like that. So everytime something went wrong, like one birthday where I ate too much, I was like "See! I can't do this!" And it became a self-fullfilling prophecy that I believed in more and more everytime I 'failed'.

Flash forward to January of this year. I had just moved into our own apartment together with my boyfriend, it was a new year and things were going well. I thought 'well, Christmas is over, let's give it another go'. It was exactly the right moment. I had stability, a boyfriend to be my accountability buddy, and I told myself 'whatever happens, DON'T QUIT. Even if you binge the first week you start.' And believe me, I had to drill that into my mind. "Don't give up. Don't give up. Don't give up'.

That month, I started out at BMI 41 (morbidly obese), and now there's only 2 lbs left until my BMI becomes less than 35 (class 1 obese), which will mean that I crossed a whole BMI category! In all my attempts at losing weight, I have never lost this much weight. I finally got the lifestyle change and right mindset down. If you read this and are still totally hopeless about ever losing the weight, you CAN do it. Even if your own mind fights you everyday, if you REALLY want it, and if you keep trying, it WILL click one day.

At one point, I was so desperate to lose the weight that I intentionally gained a few pounds to qualify for weight loss surgery (which I didn't get in the end) and look at me now! You need to be brutally honest with yourself about what you eat, and remind yourself that one fuckup doesn't mean that you're doomed to fail. Everyone eats too much sometimes. Just shrug and continue! It's all about understanding that you need to change the way you look at food, and that consistency matters most in determining your weight. If I can do it, I really believe that anyone who really wants to, can do it in the end.

I am really not the person to write sentimental motivational stuff like this, but I believe if I can help even one person overcome the massive struggle with their own mind, it will be so worth it. Also, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask :)
