Ab exercises

Going into my second week of weight training, really for the first time in my life. I’ve got the home gym set up, working with barbell bench press and dumbbells. Not trying to get super ripped over here, but I would like to see some definition in at least my upper abdomen eventually.

I’ve been doing 100 crunches and 100 bicycle crunches at the end of my workouts 3 days a week. I’ve seen people say that body weight exercises aren’t sufficient for training abs, that you have to do weighted exercises like cable crunches. As a starting off point, am I wasting my time? I can really feel a burn in my core after I do the crunches so I would assume I have to be making some progress.
