So I'm a large guy, 6'1, 245 pounds. Recently I've decided to get my weight back down to where it used to be and started going to the gym. My friend who is a well trained dude and is very into fitness suggested that we should start going out in general more to check out stores to chill and go to parts of the town we don't know that well for fun.
On most of these days we end up walking around for 3-5 hours minus a 30 min snack/eating break. He told me this would be a less exhausting way to burn calories and that I should install some step counters to get an idea of how much I've burned. I have two step counters installed and both of them on during our walking sessions. While there is around 5% deviation, they give me a fairly similar number on the calories burned and distance walked. Now, my issue here is that we walk around in a fairly slow pace since we are checking things out. However, the step counters tell me that I've walked 12-20 kilometers (8.5-12.5 miles) and typically I've burned 1200-2000 calories walking depending on how many hours we have walked (3-5).
This seems like a very large number for me considering that I don't even feel like we have been that physically active, and on the days where I've supposedly burned 2000 calories, I will often be at a more than -2500 calorie deficit for the day since my maintenance is 2500 and I eat 1500-2000. This is why I'm starting to feel kind of skeptical about their trustworthiness. Is there anyway these numbers are an accurate depiction of the calories I burn?
