Advice on going to the gym for the first time

This doesn’t fit the sub too well but I wasn’t able to post it in any related subs.

I’ve been thinking about going to the gym for a while now but I haven’t really done much to sort it out. In the past couple of months I haven’t been too active. I am now over 25BMI(ik bmi’s a bit shit) and a couple weeks ago I checked my weight a few times and I went from 73-75kg in a few days, and that was the last time I checked. So I am 75kg at 172cm (5”7). Likely because I’ve eaten like a African child most of the time but my brain hasn’t gone “my dude you’re not growing as much stop eating dumbass” yet.

Just for some information, I used to be fitter earlier in the year. I cycled to school and back sometimes, which was 17km counting both journeys, and I went to a running club every tuesday and Thursday ( did long distance runs but I’m better at short distance) from June until the start of December where I skipped maybe one of the days each week, which then turned to 1.5 week gaps until smth like mid feb where I stopped going completely. Now I struggle to do a push-up at home ahhhhh

I would like to lose some of that extra fat I’ve gained. I’m not interested in ripping all my muscles by trying to get THICC arm muscles and a six pack in 4 days as lots of under 18s try to do(unless i can break something to skive my exams :D ), I just want to get fitter. I am also going on a holiday for a month (and my mum just switches hotels every two days because she likes travelling everywhere rather than chilling by the beach for a week ) and I am then going a residential for two weeks. Being a bit fitter for those two things would be helpful.

But I don’t want to go in there with no idea what I’m doing, so I have some questions:

What are the most important stretches to avoid cramps (I’ve had one before so I know it’s not very nice)

Should I even go to the gym? When I think of the gym I think of the gym where you can go in whenever you want, not the classes, because I don’t want to do the classes. I’m 16 so it might not be really necessary or useful idk.

What machines or equipment should I use? What exercises should I do, especially for the type of stuff I’ve done?

What is the gym “culture” like? What stuff should I know about? Apart from reracking weights if you’ve used them. That I know about lol

How many times a week should I go?

How many hours per day should I spend?

Should I go no#2? I have GCSEs for the next month, so maybe it’s a bad idea, although I was thinking that going could the gym would be a nice break from revision that’s still useful, rather than the break being wasting my time by looking at reddit and discord :).

Do I need a small towel that’s the size of a tea towel, or like a proper towel? I don’t wanna bring a big towel if I don’t need to then look like a dumbass lol

Sorry if this post was written badly, it’s like midnight so I couldn’t come up with the right words or whatever

Alternatively I’ll become anorexic to epic 🅱️rank my family
