I'm in the National Guard and always struggled with weight/staying in shape. I've had a lot of people try to help me lose it but nothing really got me going. We found out there was a deployment coming up and my leadership told me if my BMI wasn't to standard I wasn't going and would get kicked out. I've spent 12 years in the military and planned on doing 20 so that I could retire and collect a pension. This would have been a huge loss and it would have felt like 12 years wasted because I was too lazy to control my weight.
In mid-October I weighed 295. Went to a 2 week school (non-fitness related) and spent the time with a buddy who's a full time personal trainer. We started doing cardio in the morning and weights in the evenings. After the course, I did a 10 day cleanse (plant based, super organic type) and dropped 12 lbs. It felt great to start to see some progress. Over the next few months I forced myself to run 3-5 miles at least 4 times a week. I stopped eating out and focused on portion control more than anything else for my meals. I couldn't believe that every time I weighed myself the numbers kept going down.
January arrives and its time for our physical. I stepped on to the scale and weighed 255. I had people in my unit who were astonished by my progress. Several members of my leadership told me straight up that they were already starting the paperwork to kick me out because they didn't think it was possible. I'm typing this now from my office overseas and sitting happily at 245. My goal is to drop another 20 and surprise the hell out of my wife when I get home.
