How can you tell if what you're dealing with is bad habits or bad health?

Hey, I'll start with the obligatory apology for bad format, I'm on mobile.

For some background, I've tried this weight-loss thing before. I spent around 5 months going to the gym, in coordination with avoiding unhealthy foods. In that time period, my weight didn't budge but maybe 10 pounds. I couldn't find any indication of why that might have been, aside from looking at both sides of my family and discovering a variety of health issues, most prominent being thyroid problems on both sides. To be fair, I never counted calories, so there's a chance I'm still eating way too much. I've spent most of my life overweight, and though I'm still young, I'm tired of feeling (and looking) unhealthy.

So I was wondering if anyone here has been faced with a bad family history that (may have) passed down health issues, like thyroid problems. How can I tell if I'm dealing with a hormone problem that may require side-care versus just needing to push harder?
