First major NSV

Like many that post here for the first time I have been lurking on this site for the past several months, but haven’t posted much. I’m not usually the type that gets motivated through other people, but I have to say, this site has truly changed my mindset on healthy living and given me tools to get through some of the struggles we all face when trying to lose weight.

Initially I had no intention of posting this, but my wife encouraged me to share my recent victory. My back story is similar to many, I was a skinny athletic kid/young adult until at 26 I had a medical condition that messed with some hormones, and had me on steroids for a bit. I am 6’2” and at the time weighed 190. Within a month of my surgery I was up to 230, and I haven’t looked back. The initial 40lbs were due in the most part to the surgery, but the following 40 over the past 16 years were all me!

Fast forward to this Christmas. I weighed 270lbs, and had become pretty sedentary (or extremely). I was at my in laws for the holiday and mentioned that I wanted to try and train for a duathlon that was coming up in the middle of April. Well needless to say that got quite the laugh from everyone at the party. And that did it for me. Fuck them! Sure I am big, but it was over 12 weeks away. So, on December 28th I started my training.

The race was a 5k run, 10k bike, followed by another 5k run. I trained 6 days a week in the gym or outside, switching between bike and running. I did a couch to 10k program for the running, and loosely followed a couch to 30k bike program. My goal was to finish the race without walking. On January 7th I decided I needed to lose weight in order to keep up the running, so I started with CICO. I had done it in the past with decent results, but I didn’t have r/loseit to guide me through and keep me motivated.

I am now down to 223, and last Saturday I finished that damn duathlon! I was slow, but I didn’t walk. The amazing thing was that it was hard to finish the race, but I wasn’t dying. I felt great. I feel great. I now love running (yes love it), am working on improving my 5k time, and have already picked out my next two races. My goal is to participate in a couple of duathlons a year, and remain in “5k” shape.

I still have a long way to go to reach my goal weight (192 lbs, just under overweight), and I’m almost more nervous about the maintenance when I get there than I am reaching the goal, but I feel great. I was always a huge believer in the old “you can’t outrun a bad diet”, and while that is true adding exercise makes a huge difference in so many ways.

Sorry for the long post (I guess I had a lot pent up over the past several months), but knowingly or unknowingly you guys were second only to my family in pushing me to reach this goal and I wanted to share my biggest success to this date.
